Have you considered replacing your cream moisturiser for a facial oil but were a bit worried that it may lead to clogged pores and breakouts? Don’t worry, you’re not alone.
Oils are a natural way to deliver nutrients and fatty acids to your skin. Oils contain potent antioxidants, protect the skin, can be anti-inflammatory and plump the skin. They are great for the most sensitive of skins and can actually help relieve various conditions including eczema and acne.
The most important thing to remember is that you must choose the right one for your skin type. It’s very important that when you are choosing an oil to use on your face that it isn’t going to lead to clogged pores and breakouts.
Have you ever heard of 'comedogenic'? By definition comedogenic means tending to clog pores. So when choosing an oil you want to choose one that is going to be on the non-comedogenic side, especially if you have skin that is prone to breakouts.
Comedogenicity of oils is measured by the combinations of fatty acids, Linoleic acid and Oleic acid in oils and how they affect the skin, and are categorised based on the how likely they are to clog your pores. They are measured on a scale 0-5. Oils higher in Linoleic acid tend to have a lighter feel whereas oils rich in Oleic acid make oils feel richer and thicker. Oils with a higher level of Linoleic acid (Omega-6 fatty acid) are best for skin prone to breakouts and have a lower comedogenic rating. Studies have shown skin suffering from acne have a low level of linoleic acid.
This is how the scale is measured:
0 - Will Not Clog Pores
1 - Low
2 - Moderately Low
3 - Moderate
4 - Fairly High
5 - High
When choosing your oil make sure it is:
- Organic and unrefined
- Free of preservatives and cheaper filler oils
We recommend choosing oils that are certified organic as you will be assured that you are getting the most superior oil for your skin.
