What inspired you to start Saya Skincare? The business grew very organically. I really did not set out to create a business out of making skincare, I just had a passion for making natural products.
Growing up on the sunny shores of Noosa I struggled to find natural products that suited my problem skin. I remember going to beauty therapists and them giving me facials and endless products that would end up not helping me at all. I remember trying to read the ingredients on these products and thinking what is all of this stuff? Plus they didn't work they just made my skin worse. This inspired me to study natural therapies and there began the creation of the products. I had a strong desire to create purely plant-based, organic skincare, respect our beautiful environment and stand firmly against animal testing.
What makes Saya Skincare different from other skincare products?
Our products are genuinely Organic, made with Organic Australian Native botanical ingredients. Our products are 100% Australian made and owned too. Our recently launched face range is certified by the ACO, we are also proudly accredited by the Australian Made and Choose Cruelty Free bodies.
What is your skincare routine?
I am very consistent with cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising my skin morning and night. I make sure I eat healthy, nutritious food and take Spirulina. I find this really helps keep my skin clear and give me energy. I am in the ocean a lot swimming or surfing so I always protect my skin with zinc.
Being the founder of Saya Skincare you have unlimited access to products, but what are the standout products you cannot live without?
AHA Exfoliant, Argan Oil, Face Serum and Body Oil. These are my go-to products that I use daily and do not go anywhere without (overseas included). Using these products keeps my skin hydrated and refined and my skin does not look the same without them.
What does leading a balanced life mean to you?
Living in Noosa, it is essential to have work life balance. I love to exercise and have coffee with friends before I head in to the office. I also love the ocean, so will try to get to the beach as much as possible during summer. The business is structured in a way that much of the work can be remotely, this gives me the freedom to travel whilst giving me the ability to manage the business.
What is your ultimate beauty advise?
I love products, but less is more. If I’m not working I won’t wear make-up at all, but I always make sure I have washed my face and put a moisturiser on. I tint my eyelashes so I don’t have to wear mascara too often as my eyes are so sensitive to anything.
I will drench my skin with oil every night after cleansing and exfoliating my skin. I use my AHA face exfoliate every night as it is so gentle yet so effective, it immediately makes my skin feel soft and fresh.
I will use a French clay mask once a week for a real clean out. The rose hip in it helps brighten my skin and the drawing action of the clay when it dries on the skin stimulate circulation and gives the skin an instant healthy glow.
What is the best beauty (or fashion) advice you have ever been given?
My approach to skincare is of course keeping it natural. Focus on looking after my skin and health without fuss. I exercise regularly and take spirulina, and drink lots of water. When is comes to my skin keep it simple but be consistent. Cleanse, Exfoliate and moisturise morning and night. This is the key to healthy skin and I know especially with myself I have to keep my routine simple and then I'm more likely to make a habit of it.
When it comes to style, self-confidence and glowing skin is the foundation. My favourite style is effortless, classic and natural. One of my good friends has always said choose classic simple pieces to invest in and accessorise to change up your look.
What is the biggest beauty lesson you’ve learnt?
Always cleanse and moisturise you face before going to bed.
What is the biggest business lesson you’ve learnt?
Surround yourself with inspiring and positive people.
Listen to yourself if something doesn’t feel right it really never is right. Life is a huge journey of learning from mistakes and I guess if you don’t make mistakes you never really learn.
Tell us your favourite skin tips or tricks?
I can honestly say I have never taken much skin care advice apart from what mum has always drilled into me and that is wash your face before bed, avoid sugar and drink lots of water.
What does your diet look like on a day to day basis?
I eat pretty clean. I take spirulina every day and have a green drink in the mornings with apple cider vinegar, it makes me feel good instantly. I take magnesium everyday which is also really great for the skin and helps my body recover better from my workouts. I drink so much water too.
List your next Travel destination (real or wishful!)
Mexico, I just discovered how amazing Mexico is after visiting for 2 weeks. I really want to go back there again soon and explore more of Mexico.
How do you maintain your skin whilst travelling?
I have a hydrating Rose water mist on hand to spritz my face regularly. It’s like a drink of water on my face and is so refreshing. I also drink plenty of water. If I remember to pack it in my carry on I love taking my Slip silk eye mask with me, I am far more likely to sleep on the flight with this.
If you could go back in time and give your 20 something self advice, what would it be?
Wear sunscreen every day.
