Winter weather is no fun for your skin. Cold temperatures and low humidity levels result in dry air, which steals moisture away from the skin. Luckily, here in Australia the temps don’t drop down too low, but that doesn’t mean we can be slack with our skincare routines during the colder months.
To reduce redness and itching, and keep skin more healthy and comfortable this season, try these 9 tips and you'll be glowing all the way through to Spring.
1) KEEP IT CREAM Clean your skin with a cream-based or gentle foaming cleanser. Soap-based formulas can be too harsh.
2) MOISTU-RISE AND SHINE Moisturise regularly, both morning and night after cleansing your skin.
3) CONSIDER A SERUM A serum is a great addition to your daily skincare routine. Serums will deeply moisturise your skin; the small molecules allow for more penetration and will hydrate more than just the top layer of your skin.
4) ESSENTIAL OILS Use a richer moisturiser or add a couple of drops of oil to your daily moisutriser. Argan oil and Rose Hip oil are very versatile, and adding a drop or two can give your skin the extra nourishment it needs.
5) CONSISTENCY IS KEY Just because it’s Winter doesn’t mean that you have to change your routine or products entirely. Use a serum, oil and moisturiser that suit your skin best and stay consistent, this ensures that your skin gets a proper PH balance. A sudden change in your skincare routine and products can lead to breakouts.
6) SLOUGH IT OFF We often forget to help the skin slough off dead cells in the winter. Moisture can’t get in if the dead cells are too plentiful, so exfoliate regularly using a granulated scrub to help remove the build-up. This will help your moisturizer do its work and encourage circulation. Make sure to use an exfoliator specific for the face and one for the body. Don’t use body scrubs on the face as the granules can be too harsh and cause irritation and damage.
7) HYDRATE BEFORE YOU HIBERNATE We tend to drink less water in the Winter and turn to drinks that warm us up- like coffee and tea. The skin needs hydration from the inside out, so try to limit the amount of coffee and caffeinated tea (especially before bed!) and drink a little warm water with lemon, it can be very refreshing and hydrating.
8) SAY BYE TO DRY Apply oil to damp skin. The damp skin helps keep some of that extra water in the top layer of the epidermis. It's also a great layering option, especially for drier skin. After cleansing the skin, apply a few spritzes of toning mist directly to your face, then follow with either Argan oil or Rose Hip oil.
9) THE GOOD FATS Eat plenty of essential fatty acids. Particularly omega-3 (found in avocado and oily fish) and omega-6 (found in nuts, wholegrains and flaxseed oil), which keep skin hydrated and clarified. A deficiency in both of these may result in dry skin.
BONUS TIP: Although the sun won't feel as strong for the next few months, it’s still very important to use a sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays. It’s one of the best ways to prevent premature ageing!
