Pre & Post Pregnancy Skincare Routines: Insights from Saya

As a mum of two, soon to welcome my third, I've navigated maintaining a skincare routine that is both effective and safe. Being the founder of Saya Skincare, the journey through pregnancy has introduced additional considerations in the development and formulation of skincare. My personal experiences and extensive research have led us to create routines specifically tailored to meet the unique demands of pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Pregnancy induces numerous changes, not only emotionally and physically but also in our skin. The famed pregnancy glow comes alongside challenges like hormonal acne, hyperpigmentation, and increased sensitivity.

Now more than ever, it is critical to be conscious of the ingredients in your skincare products, ensuring they support your body's changes without compromising effectiveness.

Creating a Healthy Foundation

During and after pregnancy, it's about establishing a healthy foundation for your skin. You'll want to nourish and fortify your skin with rich, nutrient-dense ingredients that effectively support it through the various stressors pregnancy introduces. Common concerns include acne, sensitivity, dryness, pigmentation, itchy skin, and the risk of stretch marks.

Managing Pigmentation

Pigmentation is a frequent complaint during pregnancy. While topical retinoids are standard for hyperpigmentation and melasma, safer alternatives exist. Ingredients such as lactic acid, glycolic acid, and azelaic acid not only brighten the skin and reduce hyperpigmentation but are also effective at diminishing fine lines. These ingredients are safer options for chemical exfoliants during pregnancy. Azelaic acid, in particular, is excellent for soothing inflammation, reducing acne, and lightening pigmentation. Bakuchiol, a plant-derived compound, has a chemical structure similar to retinol. While it is not identical, it targets many of the same skin receptors. Although its safety during pregnancy is debated, it has proven to be a gentle yet effective ingredient for skin rejuvenation. However, I recommend consulting with your obstetrician or a specialist for advice. Reducing overall sun exposure and being consistent with applying sunscreen can significantly decrease hyperpigmentation. I prefer mineral-based sunscreens, which act as a physical barrier against sun damage and are particularly suitable during pregnancy due to their skin-friendly properties.

Acne and Inflammation

Pregnancy can also exacerbate acne. Ingredients like niacinamide, azelaic acid, and lactic acid are excellent for treating acne and reducing inflammation. Niacinamide boosts the skin's resilience, reduces pore appearance, evens out skin tone, and fortifies the skin barrier. It is also beneficial for managing acne and controlling oil production.

Anti-Aging Care

There's no need to sideline your anti-ageing routine. Vitamins like niacinamide, vitamin C, and peptides are critical for supporting and treating the skin, especially for their effective anti-ageing properties. These ingredients are essential for maintaining a radiant complexion. Niacinamide, for example, visibly minimises enlarged pores, improves uneven skin tone, softens fine lines and wrinkles, reduces dullness, and strengthens a compromised skin barrier.

Preventing Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are another common concern, and prevention is crucial. Commit to applying rich, emollient creams across your entire body, especially on areas prone to stretching. Ingredients safe for pregnancy, such as fatty acids and rich emollient oils and butters like shea butter, macadamia oils, and cocoa butter, prevent transepidermal water loss and enhance skin elasticity. Botanical oils such as rosehip, jojoba, and evening primrose are rich in fatty acids and antioxidants, supporting skin elasticity and helping to prevent stretch marks.

Skincare Routine Recommendations

Cleanse: Cleansing morning and night is crucial. Double cleansing in the evening removes impurities and sets the stage for effective skincare absorption.

Exfoliate: Regular exfoliation, at least once a week, ensures optimum skin health and enhances the efficacy of other skincare products.

Serums: Add serums to your routine for targeted results. Look for ingredients like niacinamide, vitamin C, peptides, hyaluronic acid, and bioactive botanicals like Kakadu Plum.

Moisturise: Essential for all skin types, moisturisers should be rich in botanical extracts, oils, and ceramides, crucial for maintaining a healthy skin barrier and replenishing damaged skin.

Post-Pregnancy Care

Post-pregnancy, your skin might require adjustments to deal with stress, fatigue, and hormonal imbalances, showing signs like dryness, acne, or lingering pigmentation. Continue with your adapted pregnancy routine or simplify it based on your new daily schedule. Consistency is vital to maintain skin health.
