What Is Bakuchiol?

What Is Bakuchiol?

Bakuchi-what? I’m sure that’s what crossed your mind after first hearing about this coveted new skincare ingredient. Shortly followed by, how do you say that Pronounced: bah-koo-chee-ole, this game-changing skincare ingredient is naturally derived from the Babchi plant and is a less-irritating, natural alternative to retinol. Which is why this gentle, vegan ingredient has been blowing up the skincare world and getting everyone excited – including us.

Why is it called a Natural Retinol Alternative?

Most skincare enthusiasts would have at least heard of retinol before, if not used it in their daily skincare routine. However, just to jog your memory, retinol is derived from Vitamin A and is basically the golden child of the skincare world. It increases skin cell turnover and is used to treat a whole range of skin woes from hyperpigmentation and sun damage to acne and fine lines and wrinkles.

Sounds great, right?

Retinols have a downside though. They are very active on the skin, making them too strong for some people (especially sensitive skin types) and can cause dryness, irritation, sensitivity and redness, not to mention making you extra sensitive to sunlight. Not so great, right?

Enter Bakuchiol. It’s a natural ingredient that works the same on the skin as Retinols without all those irksome side effects. Making it the natural retinol alternative we have all been searching for.

Who can use Bakuchiol?

Those normally excluded from the retinol game, rejoice! Bakuchiol is safe for all skin types. It is also 100% natural, vegan, and pregnancy and breastfeeding safe.

Could it be more perfect?

How does Bakuchiol work?

Boasting antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-aging properties, Bakuchiol boosts collagen production (the protein in skin that keeps it plump and firm) and increases cell turnover (your skin’s natural renewal process). Which basically means it can soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smooth skin texture, reduce acne, fade dark spots, improve firmness and elasticity and brighten dull skin for a healthier, glowing complexion. Which is all pretty awesome if you ask us.

How should I apply Bakuchiol?

While retinol is usually best applied at night, Bakuchiol can be used in the morning or at night, as it does not increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun (unlike retinols). As it is also brilliant for sensitive skin, you don't need to build up to using it or start slow; you can dive right in. Moisturisers and serums are ideal for capitalising on this game-changing ingredient as they are left on the skin for it to work its magic.

Intrigued and what to try for yourself? You can find Bakuchiol in our multi-correctional Renew Serum and Intense Night Repair
