6 Common Skincare Myths, Debunked

6 Common Skincare Myths, Debunked

Are you guilty of believing these skincare myths?

When it comes to your skin there are a lot of skincare myths and misconceptions. Ever heard drinking water will cure dry skin? Or perhaps that oily skin types don’t need to moisturise? Skincare myths like this are confusing and may be holding you back from your most healthy, flawless skin. To have an effective skincare routine, you need to be armed with the right information. So here you have it – six of the biggest skincare myths, busted.

Myth 1: All foaming cleansers strip your skin

The truth: Not all foaming cleansers are created equal.

A lot of cleansers on the market contain harsh foaming agents that strip your skin or disrupt your skins acid mantle. But as with any skincare product, it is always imperative to look at the formulation and ingredients. For example, our Cleansing Gel is an ultra-hydrating and balancing gel cleanser that is pH balanced and is full of ingredients to support skin health. It may foam, but it will never strip your skin.

Our best advice? Choose a foaming cleanser that is sulphate free and pH balanced – this will give you a superior clean and aid skin health.

Myth 2: Oily skin doesn't need moisturisers or oils.

The truth: This is one of the biggest myths about oily skin. Many people confuse sebum production with hydration, but the fact is, oily skin can still become dehydrated – a.k.a lacking in water. Dehydrated skin also causes your skin to produce even more oil, exacerbating the issue and leaving you with dull, tight, flaky AND overly-oily skin – not a great combination.

Moisturisers and face oils are key ways to deliver hydration to your skin and actually help balance your skin’s sebum production. So, no matter your skin type, always moisturise morning and night, preferably with a moisturiser tailored for your skin type.

Myth 3: Pores open and close

The truth: Pores don’t open or close! Whether you have large or small pores, pore size is genetically predetermined, and you cannot alter their structure permanently with skincare.

What you can do, is minimise their appearance by keeping them clean. Pores look bigger when they are filled with dirt and gunk (and can lead to such things like blackheads). So, by cleansing each morning and double cleansing of an evening, exfoliating 1-2 times a week and using a pH-balanced toning mist, you’ll keep your pores perfectly clean (and therefore, less noticeable).

Myth 4: Anti-ageing products are only useful when I'm older

The truth: Prevention is better than a cure. You don’t have to reach a certain age to start using anti-ageing skincare products, it’s actually better to start when you are younger to help your skin retain its youthful properties as you age. The best anti-ageing product you should start using right now, no matter your age is SPF.

Myth 5: You don't need SPF when it's cloudy or raining

The truth: UV radiation has nothing to do with temperature and can easily pass through clouds, smog and glass. It is entirely possible to get sunburnt when it’s overcast, but even if you don’t burn, the sun exposure is still damaging your skin (which is the leading cause of pre-mature ageing). So, wear SPF every day. No matter the weather.

Myth 6: Drinking water helps improve dry skin

The truth: Drinking more water won't make dry skin look or feel better. Dry skin is caused by a lack of oil, so it is the natural oils in your skin that need to be replenished – not the moisture levels. The best ingredients for dry skin include Hyaluronic Acid, Essential Fatty Acids and Ceramides.
