Living with psoriasis? Why natural skincare might help.
For many, managing psoriasis means relying on medicated creams, steroid-based treatments, or prescriptions that come with more side effects than solutions. And while natural skincare is a gentler alternative, it’s completely understandable to feel cautious, especially when your skin is already reactive or hypersensitive.
At Saya Skincare, we understand the complexities of caring for compromised skin. In fact, the brand was founded by Saya McDermott when she was searching for a solution for her own skin. Years of eczema, constant trial and error, and the hunt for something that worked without all the harsh chemicals and ingredients you can’t read on the bottle. The result is a collection grounded in botanical ingredients, free from harsh chemicals, and designed to support the skin barrier.
While we don’t claim to treat psoriasis, we do believe in the power of ingredients shown to calm irritation, reduce dryness, and nurture the skin’s natural resilience.
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes thick, red, scaly patches, most often on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back. It’s caused by an overactive immune response that speeds up skin cell production. While there’s no known cure, there are ways to manage it and improve your skin’s comfort day to day.
What Causes Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is usually triggered by a mix of genetics and lifestyle factors. Stress, infections, medications, skin trauma and even the weather can play a role. The skin’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells, which causes the skin to turn over much faster than usual. Understanding your own triggers is key, and so is caring for your skin gently and consistently.
We recommend seeing a naturopath to determine the underlying cause of your skin. If you don’t already have one in your local area, there are many amazing ones out there that do online consultations, like Amelia Botanica or Husk Naturopathy.*
Can Skincare Really Help?
Natural skincare isn’t a magic fix but for many, it’s a way to support skin that feels inflamed, dry or out of balance. Staying moisturised, avoiding synthetic irritants like sulphates and fragrances and using barrier-supportive ingredients can help ease the discomfort and appearance of dry, flaky patches.
Soothing, hydrating ingredients like shea butter, aloe vera and argan oil have been studied for their potential to reduce inflammation and calm the skin without the heavy, harsh textures that can sometimes make things worse.

The Natural Ingredients We Lean On
Shea Butter
Shea butter is one of our favourite ingredients when it comes to deeply nourishing the skin. It’s rich in fatty acids and antioxidants and helps lock in moisture while supporting repair. A 2018 study even suggests that it may complement other psoriasis treatments by helping calm inflammation and soften dry patches. (International Journal of Molecular Sciences)
Try it in:
Aloe Vera
If you’ve ever used aloe on a sunburn, you already know how cooling and calming it can be. But it also offers relief for dry, irritated skin in general. Aloe vera is incredibly hydrating and has been shown to reduce redness and itching in psoriasis-prone skin. It's lightweight, fast-absorbing and perfect for calming angry flare-ups without overwhelming your skin. (Health Central, Medical News Today)
Try it in:
Lactic Acid
When psoriasis causes a build-up of thick, flaky skin, gentle exfoliation can help. Lactic acid is a hydrating AHA that encourages cell turnover without stripping or irritating the skin. It's especially great for the body and can also help on the scalp when used carefully. Just make sure to patch test first and avoid broken skin. (Global Healthy Living Foundation)
Try it in:
Argan Oil
Scalp psoriasis can be one of the hardest things to manage. Argan oil is a lightweight option that’s rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids. It helps reduce dryness and itchiness without making hair greasy. A few drops massaged gently into the scalp can help soften scales and support hydration. (Healthline, My Psoriasis Team)
Try it in:
Argan Body Oil (also a go-to for locking in moisture post-shower)
Every product is a reflection of years of lived experience, research, and a genuine desire to create something that actually works - because for us, it’s personal. We’re not promising a cure. But we do believe in supporting your skin with ingredients that work with it, not against it. If you're trying something new, especially alongside medical treatments, always check in with your healthcare provider or naturopath. What works for one person might not work for another.
If you’ve been searching for something gentle, nourishing and natural to support your skin, you’re not alone. We’re with you. And we’ll keep creating products that help you feel seen, supported and more comfortable in your skin.
