People often ask me how Saya began, and I think they expect a neat answer. A gap in the market, a business plan, a big moment of inspiration. The truth is much simpler than that, and much more personal.
It started with my own skin.

I grew up in Noosa, and I still live here today. If you've spent time here, you'll know how this place gets into you. The early light over the water. Mornings in the ocean, walks around the headland, the smell of eucalyptus and salt drifting through the national park. Life here moves with nature, and looking after yourself is simply part of how you live.
So when my skin started to struggle, it felt like something was out of step.
About twenty years ago, I was dealing with breakouts and eczema, and I felt like I'd tried everything. I remember standing in front of shelves full of products and feeling completely stuck, because every option seemed to ask me to give something up. The natural products felt gentle, but they didn't do much. The ones that seemed to work were full of ingredients I didn't feel good about putting on my skin. None of it reflected the way I lived or the way I wanted to feel.
So I started creating my own.

I began blending botanical oils and extracts by hand, reading everything I could find about ingredients and how skin really works, and testing every formula on myself. There was a lot of trial and error in those early years, and a lot of learning. But the most important lesson changed the way I thought about skincare completely.
For so long, I'd been trying to fix my skin. Clear it, calm it, control it. What I slowly came to understand was that my skin didn't need to be fought. It needed to be supported.
Our skin is remarkable. It has its own protective barrier, a delicate balance of oils, lipids and moisture that works every day to look after us. When that barrier is strong, skin feels comfortable and looks its best. When it's stripped or stressed, it lets us know. Once I understood that, I stopped chasing quick fixes and started focusing on nourishing and strengthening. Giving my skin what it needed to look after itself.
And slowly, it began to change. It felt calmer. It looked healthier. It felt like mine again.

I never set out to build a brand. Friends started asking what I was using, then friends of friends, then people I'd never met. Before long I had a little stall at the Eumundi Markets, and every weekend I'd find myself talking to women about their skin and hearing the same frustration I'd felt. They were tired of choosing between something that was good for them and something that actually worked. Between something beautiful to use and something they could trust.
That was when I realised what I'd made wasn't just for me.
Somewhere along the way, I also realised that I didn't want skincare to feel like a chore. So often it becomes another task on the list, a set of steps to rush through before bed. But the moments I spent caring for my skin had become some of my favourite moments of the day. A few minutes that were completely mine. A chance to slow down, breathe, and feel good.
I think that's where the idea of ritual really came from. A routine is something you do. A ritual is something you feel.

Scent has always been a big part of that for me. It's one of the most powerful senses we have, so closely tied to memory and emotion that a single breath can change how you feel. That's why I've only ever used essential oils to scent our products. I love that they're the true essence of a plant, and that each one carries its own feeling. Something bright and citrusy in the morning can wake you up and lift you. Something softer at night, like lavender or bergamot, can help you let go of the day. Deeper, woody notes feel grounding, like walking through the bush after rain. Over time, those scents become little cues to yourself to slow down and take a moment.
The same goes for how things feel on the skin, and even how they look on your shelf. I've always wanted every part of the experience to feel considered and beautiful, because I believe the things we reach for every day should bring us a little joy.
Growing up in Noosa, surrounded by the national park, the coastline and so much natural beauty, native plants were always part of my world. I knew the smell of lemon myrtle and eucalyptus long before I knew anything about skincare. As I learnt more about ingredients, I became fascinated by what these plants could offer.

Australian native botanicals have evolved over thousands of years to survive some of the harshest conditions on earth. Intense sun, heat, drought and wind. To thrive here, many of them have become incredibly rich in antioxidants and nourishing compounds, their own natural way of looking after themselves. There was something about that which really stayed with me. These plants have learnt to be resilient, and I wanted to bring that same resilience to our skin.
Because living here asks a lot of our skin too. The sun, the salt water, the heat and humidity of summer, the dry air of winter. It's a beautiful place to live, but so many of the products I tried over the years were never made with these conditions in mind. I wanted to create formulas that were, formulas that help replenish what our environment takes away and support skin to stay comfortable, hydrated and strong.
As the years went on, my approach grew alongside the science. I've always believed in the power of botanicals, and I still love pushing the boundaries of what natural ingredients can do. But I also discovered that some of the most exciting things happen when nature is paired with the right skin-loving actives, like ceramides and peptides, chosen because they genuinely support the skin and work in harmony with everything around them. For me, it's always been about the best of both worlds, and about every ingredient earning its place.

Twenty years on, Saya has grown in ways I never could have imagined. You'll find us in luxury wellness spaces across the USA, Asia and here in Australia, in the hands of spa therapists who share our love of ritual and touch, from our flagship Noosa store to Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays.
But Saya is still created here in Noosa, just as it always has been. And at its heart, it's still the same thing it was when I made that very first formula. A belief that you shouldn't have to settle. That caring for your skin can be something you look forward to. And that the small moments we take for ourselves each day really do matter.
That's why Saya exists. And that's what we'll always do.
