For our Saya Woman Series #13, we had the pleasure of interviewing Sarah, the inspiring founder of Bluebird Co. We dove into her journey of building a successful business, balancing creativity and entrepreneurship, and how she empowers women through her work. Tell us a little about your journey—what inspired you to start Bluebird Co?
Bluebird Co began as a small idea during my maternity leave after my daughter was born. I was looking for jewellery that felt stylish, personal, and meaningful enough to wear everyday—and quickly realised there was a gap for exactly that. What started as a personal project soon evolved into a collection of personalised pieces for adults and children, each one thoughtfully designed to bring a sense of elegance and meaning to everyday moments. Fast forward ten years, and my husband and I now run Bluebird Co full-time, bringing those original inspirations to life through each piece we create.
As an entrepreneur, what has been the most rewarding part of building your brand?
Bringing each design to life, adding that personal touch, and packaging every piece ready to be sent out is still one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. Seeing our jewellery worn and hearing from our wonderful customers about the meaning and sentiment they find in wearing or gifting our pieces—it's always so special and truly fulfilling for me.
How do you balance the creative and business aspects of running Bluebird Co?
I’d love to say I’ve found my rhythm in all areas of the business, but that balance is still a work in progress. When inspiration strikes, I carve out time for my favourite part—the creative process. Day-to-day, though, it’s a mix of many tasks, as we’re hands-on with every part of running the business.
Your jewellery is so personal and meaningful. How does your own story influence the designs you create?
I've always believed that whatever I pour my time and energy into should feel purposeful. As a teacher, I loved not only the educational side of my work but also the meaningful connections and growth that came from working with young people. In creating jewellery, I felt just as strongly about designing pieces that would carry meaning for those who wear them. Our personalised pendants and engraving allow each customer to have jewellery made uniquely for them, bringing that sense of personal significance to every piece.
What advice would you give to women looking to start their own business?
My advice would be to enjoy the journey, stay consistent, and keep pursuing your dream. My vision was to create a range of personalised jewellery that honours traditional values while embracing a modern style—jewellery that’s both unique and stylish. It’s taken time to get here, and, as a mum of three, I sometimes wish I could fast-forward to have smoother systems and see quicker progress. But making the most of the time I have, this journey has been slow and steady, with consistency and dedication as the foundations for bringing each design to life.
At Saya, we believe in the power of self-care. What’s your go-to self-care ritual to unwind after a busy day?
After a full workday, a sunset run on the beach is the perfect way to recharge. Being by the ocean and getting to run helps me unwind and feel refreshed.
As a woman-led business, what role does community play in your brand’s values and direction?
Community is at the heart of Bluebird Co. Being a woman-led brand, we value shared stories and the connections we build with our customers and artisans worldwide. Each piece we design is meant to bring joy and meaning, and it’s so rewarding to see how our customers connect with that. Our work with artisans worldwide is a big part of this, too—building close, supportive relationships is key to creating pieces with purpose and care.
Looking ahead, what exciting plans or goals do you have for Bluebird Co in the near future?
Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to be working on new designs that continue to blend modern style with meaningful personalisation. We’re exploring fresh ideas and textures that add something unique to our collections while staying true to the timeless feel our customers love. Our goal is to keep creating pieces that feel personal and lasting, whether it’s through updated engraving options or new jewellery styles. It’s an exciting time for us, and we can’t wait to share these new designs with our community!
