While the idea of cleansing your face twice may seem a little too much, you’ll soon be won over by the powerful benefits it can bring to your skin. Not sure if double cleansing is right for you? Is it really necessary to add an extra step to your routine? We’ll explain.
Firstly, what is double cleansing?
It’s a cleansing method that uses two types of cleansers. The first step involves an oil-based cleanser like a cleansing balm to lift and draw out oil-based impurities like excess sebum, makeup and SPF. For the second step, a foaming or gel cleanser is used to remove water-based impurities like sweat, dirt and bacteria. This ensures anything that wasn’t removed in the first step is washed away - giving your skin a proper cleanout.
But doesn’t a normal cleanser already do this?
Not necessarily. Especially if you live in a city (with higher pollution levels), wear makeup or SPF daily - one face wash won’t properly dislodge makeup and pollution particles. Cleansing is the building block of skin health so when skin is not properly clean, dirt and pollution can accumulate on the surface, potentially contributing to breakouts, clogged pores and dullness.
For brighter, more youthful skin.
Double cleansing can help to revitalise dull skin. With makeup and grime removed, your skin will be ready to absorb your next skincare products. Serums, moisturisers and other targeted treatments are able to deeply penetrate and work their magic much more efficiently.
Perfectly clean and balanced skin.
Double cleansing with one strong formula may lead to over-drying and sensitivity. Using two different formulas (oil or balm first) will help to deeply cleanse without stripping the skin of natural oils - making it perfect for those with more oily complexions.
Fact: Oil attracts oil. Oil cleansers draw out oil-based impurities, lifting makeup and replenishing skin all at once.
What are the steps of a double cleanse?
- Apply a Cleansing Balm or oil to a dry face with dry, clean hands. Massage into skin for 60 seconds.
- Take a warm, damp cloth and wipe your skin clean.
- Follow with a gentle water-based cleanser like our Cleansing Gel and massage onto the skin for another 60 seconds.
- Rinse with water and follow with your usual skincare routine.
Tip: Don’t use really hot water when cleansing. This will dry skin out which can lead to a compromised skin barrier.
Only two extra minutes in your skincare routine.
Want to set yourself up for skin success? It all starts with the very first (and second) step of your skincare routine. If you’re looking to prevent buildup, breakouts and enlarged pores - opt for a double cleanse. As long as you're using the right formulas for your skin needs, a double cleanse can be helpful for all skin types.
