Step-By-Step Guide to Layering Skincare

Step-By-Step Guide to Layering Skincare

 Layer Your Skincare With Confidence!

Have you been wondering “In what order should I apply my skin care products”? Saya® is here to give you a helping hand! A great skincare routine includes essential products like cleansers, exfoliants, serums and moisturisers. Not only that but a good skincare routine includes ingredients like Vitamin C, AHA’s and Bakuchiol.

To ensure that you get the most out of your skincare, it’s important to not only apply them correctly but also in the right order!

If you want the short version: apply from thinnest to thickest.

However, if you want the longer version keep reading for our step-by-step guide on how to properly layer your skincare, how to use each product and everything in between.

Step 1: Cleanser

When: AM & PM

Why: Always start your skincare routine by cleansing your face. You will need clean skin which is free of oil, makeup and grime. This will help your lovely products to properly absorb and keep your skin bacteria free.

How: Massage into skin for 30-60secs for an effective clean. We also recommend a double cleanse in the evening, especially if you wear makeup and SPF during the day. Next, wash off and dry before moving to the next step.

Step 2: Exfoliant

When: PM – 1-3 x a week

Why: Whether chemical or physical exfoliation, this step is essential for glowing skin. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, stimulates collagen production and brightens the complexion. Exfoliation is great for treating dry, ageing skin, sun damage, scarring and hyperpigmentation.

How: Gently massage onto cleansed skin and leave for 10-30secs before rinsing well. To keep up with your exfoliation, pick a couple days a week for regular exfoliating days. We like to recommend Monday and Thursday night (pre and post weekend).

Step 3: Toner

When: AM & PM

Why: A hydrating toning mist helps restore the PH balance of your skin after cleansing and exfoliating, while also hydrating and refreshing the skin. This step prepares your skin to absorb the rest of your skincare products.

How: Spritz over the face after cleansing, exfoliating & masking. Then allow the toner to absorb for a few seconds before continuing on to the next step.

Step 4: Water-Based Serum

When: AM & PM

Why: Now that your skin is clean, exfoliated and toned, your skin is perfectly receptive to any water-based serums like a Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin B or Vitamin C serum. Applying them before your moisturiser allows them to sink in deeper. Perfect for targeting your specific skin concerns such as fine lines, scarring, acne or hyperpigmentation.

How: Squeeze out 4-6 drops onto your fingers or directly onto your forehead, cheeks and chin. Gently massage into the skin, including your neck and décolletage. Leave for 1 min to soak in.

Step 5: Eye Cream

When: AM & PM

Why: Regular moisturisers and facial oils can be too heavy for the delicate area under your eyes - they can drag eyes down creating bags, instead of aiding them. Which is why a cream formulated especially for the eyes is ideal, and helps soften fine lines, hydrate and brighten the skin.

How: Use before your moisturiser and facial oil, apply one pump to the fingertips and dab gently under and at the corner of the eye area and across the brow until absorbed.

Step 6: Moisturiser

When: AM & PM

Why: A moisturiser infuses your skin with hydration, and is normally packed full of skin-loving nutrients. You'll normally be able to find one specific for your skin type to help target dry skin, oily skin and everything in between. It is an essential step for a healthy, glowing and more youthful complexion.

How: Apply moisturiser onto dry skin and massage into the face, neck and décolletage. Allow to absorb completely before applying any facial oils.

Step 7: Face Oil

When: AM & PM

Why: Rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, antioxidants and other skin correcting ingredients, face oils or oil-based serums are food for your skin. This provides your skin with everything it needs and helps target skin concerns. What's even better? Face oils seal in all of the products underneath and make them even more effective.

How: Apply 6 drops to skin massaging directly onto face, neck and décolletage. Either apply directly to face after your moisturiser has absorbed or mix in with your daily moisturiser to dilute.

Step 8: SPF

When: AM

Why: Sun exposure is the number one cause of premature ageing and is responsible for 90% of visible changes to the skin. From free radical damage to sun spots, sunscreen protects your skin against the harsh effects of the sun and is the most important anti-ageing product you can have in your skincare routine.

How: Once your moisturiser and face oil has absorbed, apply SPF to face, neck and décolletage. Make sure to massage into the skin until absorbed. This should be your last step in your skincare routine. Re-apply throughout the day as needed.

Timing matters, too!

So you’ve applied all products in the right order, great! However there is one more step. We believe it’s important to consider the time it takes for your skin to absorb these products. We get it, sometimes this isn’t always possible since most of us are in a rush to get somewhere but if you can, allow a few minutes in between each step. This will provide your skin with time to react to each product and absorb all of the key ingredients!

Remember, always listen to your skin. Create adjustments to your skin routine and find skincare products that work with your skin, not against it!
