How To Layer Skincare In The Correct Order

How To Layer Skincare In The Correct Order

 Layer Your Skincare With Confidence

“When do I apply eye cream?”, “clay mask or exfoliate first?”, “Does facial oil come before or after moisturiser?” We get asked questions about how to layer skincare all the time, so let’s settle it once and for all because it makes a world of difference.

Why is it important to layer skincare properly?

A great skincare routine may include essential ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C and Peptides, however if you're not applying them in the correct order, you could be compromising the overall efficiency of your routine. If you want the short version: The rule of thumb with skincare is to apply products from thinnest to thickest. However, if you want the longer version keep reading for our step-by-step guide on how to layer skincare correctly, product application and everything in between.

How many products should be in my skincare routine?

This is completely dependent on your skin concerns and preference. Sensitive skin types may prefer less steps while ageing and acne-prone may prefer to use more products.

Step 1: Cleanser

When: AM & PM

Start your skincare routine by cleansing your face and removing oil, makeup and grime. When choosing a cleanser look for pH balanced products that will effectively remove oil without stripping the skin’s natural oils like our Cleansing Gel. If you have sensitive or dry skin, opt for a cleansing balm to remove all surface dirt without compromising the skin barrier. Or, if you wear makeup and SPF, double cleanse

Step 2: Exfoliant

When: PM (1-3 times a week)

Aim to exfoliate once a week using a scrub like the AHA Face Exfoliant or Detox Face Exfoliant. For acne-prone, ageing or sensitive skin try something like the Brightening Peel for a gentle yet effective exfoliation (1-3 times a week).

Step 3: Mask

When: Once a week

Masks, like the Refining Pink Clay Mask help to reset the skin, unclog pores and draw our excess sebum. They can typically be used 1-2 twice a week, after cleansing and exfoliation. For spot treatment, apply a small amount to the affected area and leave for 10 minutes, rinse off and then follow on with your normal skincare routine.

Step 4: Toner

When: AM & PM

A hydrating facial mist helps restore the pH balance of your skin and can be applied after cleansing and exfoliating. The Rose Hydrating Mist is a great option that delivers a boost of hydration and prepares your skin to absorb the rest of your skincare products.

Step 5: Water-Based Serums

When: AM & PM

Serums are packed with actives to target your specific skin concerns like fine lines, scarring, acne or hyperpigmentation. Now that your skin is clean, exfoliated and toned, your skin is perfectly receptive to any water-based serums like the Glow Serum and Super Serum. For ultimate absorption, apply serums while the skin is still damp.

Step 5: Eye Cream

When: AM & PM

The skin around your eyes is the thinnest and the most delicate on your body. This means your eyes can easily show signs of dark circles and ageing. Regular moisturisers and facial oils can sometimes be too heavy for the eye area - that’s why it’s important to use a cream formulated especially for the eyes. Once serums have absorbed, press a small of your favourite Eye Cream from inner corners to temples.

Step 6: Moisturiser

When: AM & PM

Seal in your routine with a moisturiser. Moisturisers are designed to lock in moisture (whilst preventing loss of water) and help to prevent environmental damage to your skin as it acts as a protective barrier. You may use a lightweight option in the morning like the Balance Moisture and opt for night cream during the PM, like our Intense Night Repair.

Step 7: Face Oil

When: AM & PM

Using a facial oil like our Renew Serum? For extra dry skin, try layering a few drops on top of your daily moisturiser. This will give your skin an extra boost of nourishment, especially during the colder months. Applying makeup after your skincare routine? A facial oil will help to create a smooth, hydrated base for your foundation (plus, a dewy glow).

Step 8: SPF

When: AM

Sun exposure is the number one cause of premature ageing and is responsible for 90% of visible changes to the skin. From free-radical damage to sun spots, sunscreen protects your skin against the harsh effects of the sun and is the most important anti-ageing product you can have in your skincare routine. Once your moisturiser and facial oil has been absorbed, apply SPF.

Timing matters, too!

Now that you know how to layer skincare correctly, there's one more thing to keep in mind. Consider the time it takes for your skin to absorb these products. Allow 30 seconds-1 minute in between each step. And remember, there’s no skincare routine that fits everyone, so always listen to your skin. Create adjustments to your routine based on how your skin reacts and feels.
